Problem:
Appearance of Weld Poor welding appearance
is a common welding defect. While this is not
detrimental from a structural standpoint, it detracts
from the finished appearance of the weldment.
Causes of poor welding appearance are:
- Failure to clean finished weld deposit.
- Improper joint preparation.
- Poor welding technique
.
- Failure to set current properly or improper
electrode manipulation.
To improve the appearance:
- Be sure to remove all slag, flux and spatter
from weld bead and the adjacent base metal.
- Use proper joint preparation: get the best
fit possible.
- Use the proper technique for the electrode
you’ve selected. If the electrode is deposited
with a weave, keep the motion uniform. Travel
along the joint at a constant rate.
- Do not use excessive welding currents.
